French Language Examinations

If you plan to learn or study French and you would like your achievements to be recognized through graduation, GTL Training offers you an insight on the main French exams as well as some exam preparation courses.

There are several French exams that will allow you to justify your level of fluency and proficiency. These certifications can be a security and a real advantage in a professional setting, especially since the French exams, like the DELF / DALF, are recognized internationally.

1) The Initial Diploma of French Language (DILF)

The DILF diploma of French as a foreign language assessing basic learning. This is the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), set up by the Council of Europe. The DILF is therefore the first step towards the DELF and the DALF, the more advanced official French certifications.
Although this degree is only offered in French territory, it is a very good introduction to French language given the basic skills offered during this training.
It evaluates the four language skills: Reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The best formula is to take exam preparation courses to find out what form the DILF has and especially to take advantage of a teacher’s corrections and advice.

2)  The Elementary Diploma of French Language (DELF)

The DELF is an official diploma, also issued by the Ministry of National Education, it assesses and certifies the French skills of foreign candidates and French from non-French speaking countries.

The DELF is composed of 4 diplomas, independent of each other (this means that you can register for B1 even if you have not obtained the A1 and A2 levels):
A1 / A2 correspond to an elementary level
B1 / B2 correspond to an intermediate level

At each level, the four language skills are assessed. Here is a small input of what is expected at each level:

The DELF A1 is the first proficiency level. You have to be able to conduct simple interaction. At this level, one must be able to present oneself easily and describe one’s immediate environment.

Then, you have more advanced French exams with specific characteristics:

This diploma is structured in the same way as the DELF for all audiences, but the support and the topics addressed take into account the centers of interest of the secondary school learners.

This is the professional version of the DELF It is targets specifically audiences wishing to integrate professionally in a Francophone environment. It evaluates accordingly the communicative skills necessary in the professional situations of everyday life.

This version of the DELF certificates is for beginner children in French as a foreign language and pursuing studies at the same level as French elementary studies. The tests are developed on the same model as the public versions, while the themes are adapted to the age of the candidates.

This training is intended for an adolescent public schooled in a public or private institutions.

3 ) The Advanced French Language Diploma (DALF):

The DALF consists of two independent certificates, C1 and C2 and correspond to an experienced user.

In DALF C1, the user can express himself and communicate easily and spontaneously. The lexical repertoire is broad, the speech is clear, and the structures are mastered.

Duration of collective tests: 4h

In DALF C2, the candidate demonstrates precision and ease of expression. He can perform academic tasks proficiently.

Duration of collective tests: 3h 30

It is important to prepare for the DALF by taking exam preparation courses. You will need a specialist to explain the methodology that differs from what you have worked in the other levels.

4 ) The Diploma of Language Skills (DCL):

The DCL is a French national professional diploma reserved for adults and meets the specific needs of the professional world. Its particularity is to assess language skills in situations that are as close as possible to the reality of the environment of work.

The DCL is awarded with a mention corresponding to the different levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

5)  The French Knowledge Test (TCF)

The TCF consists of three compulsory tests (oral comprehension, mastery of language structures, and written comprehension) and two complementary tests (oral and written expression).

The 3 compulsory tests consist of an MCQ of 76 items with only one possible answer for each question. The difficulty of this French exam is progressive from levels A1 to C2 of the CEFR.

In summary, this French exam aims to assess you in a context that is close to the situations you face on a daily basis in France.

The complementary tests of oral and written expression take 72 minutes and are done individually with an examiner, but each expression is the object of a double systematic correction. For these events, the difficulties are progressive and the tasks are varied; however, it is better to get closer to a test center to find out exactly what you are looking for.

A good preparation for this exam will allow you to have the necessary knowledge in the fields of social life, tourism, work or studies.
